The recent East Midlands Championships saw Pentaqua swimmers demonstrate the progress that the club has made over the past year. The Age Group competition saw us field five swimmers,Erin Easton, Matthew Broughton, Jamie Green, Max Turner and Alex Cawthra. The weekend produced 13 PBs and 5 medals for Matthew Broughton who became the East Midlands Junior Champion in the 100 Breaststroke! Every race he swam was a PB,closely followed by Max who achieved 4PBs, Jamie 2PBs, and Erin one. Alex, in his first long course competition put in a sterling performance.
A team of 15 swimmers qualified for the Youth Regional Championships this year which was held at Ponds Forge International Swimming Pool in Sheffield over the Bank Holiday weekend. our swimmers put in an outstanding performance with Dara taking Gold in the 50 and 200 Backstroke, Gold in the 100 Freestyle, Silver in the 200 Free, and 100 Backstroke, followed by Bronze in the 50 Freestyle; Bethany won Gold in the 100 and 200 Freestyle, and the 50,100 and 200 Breaststroke and Silver in the 200IM; Will won Silver in the 100 Freestyle, and Bronze in the 100 Butterfly as well as the 100 Backstroke.
Other finalists who put in some great performances were: were Harry Furnish, Dan Evans, Hedley Butlin, Ben Broughton, Caitlin Mullins, Jennifer Watson and Emma Jenkins. In addition the team included Ella Wood, Ben Swallow and Gabrielle Vickers who all swam PBs in their heats and gained much experience from this level of competition.
In the long distance competition Pentaqua was represented by Isabel Watson in the Girls 800m and Tom Green in the 1500m. Both put in fantastic performances in tough races.
The team on poolside was supported by Tracey Broughton & Ian Turner, without whose enthusiasm contributed to the great team spirit on poolside throughout the competition.
